BA crew vote for new ballot

British Airways (BA) cabin crew members of union Unite have voted for a new ballot on strike action, reports suggest.

More than 1,000 BA crew met yesterday to discuss the next stage in the bitter wrangle.

According to reports on Sky News, a majority voted to hold a new ballot, raising the possibility of strike action over Christmas.

A BA spokesperson told ABTN the airline continues to be in contact with Unite, after talks yesterday.

"We have received no notification of any ballot for industrial action. Unite's crew branch BASSA has been talking about a ballot for the last three months. It does not have the authority to call a ballot," said BA>

"It is clear that BASSA does not represent the majority of cabin crew. Only a third of crew supported previous strikes and even fewer voted against our last offer."

Unite was unavailable for comment.

Virgin Atlantic also met with union members yesterday of the British Airlines Pilots Association (BALPA), in a bid to avert the first strike in its history.
