£1 million upgrade for Stansted fire service - 21/05/2009

Stansted Airport, the UK's third busiest airport, has significantly boosted its fire fighting capabilities following the completion of a £1 million investment programme.

At a special ceremony held at the airport, BAA’s Chief Executive Colin Matthews cut the ribbon to open the new fire station extension and welcomed the arrival of three state-of-the-art fire fighting vehicles.

The extension adds additional parking bays to house the new Scania domestic appliance, an incident command vehicle and a medical support trailer.  The investment also included an extensive refurbishment to the fire station, creating a more pleasant working environment for the fire-fighters.

Stewart Wingate, Stansted Airport’s managing director, said:

“The Stansted Airport Fire Department offers a world-class service in maintaining heath and safety at our airport; protecting the millions of passengers that pass through every year and the thousands of staff who work on site.

“To continue our excellent response times, we’ve invested more than £1 million in new facilities and equipment.  This cutting edge technology will be a welcome addition to the fire and rescue fleet and will ensure the service is equipped to deal with any incident at the airport for decades to come.”

Stansted Airport’s fire manager, John Farrow, added:

“The new vehicles join the existing nine fire appliances as part of a significant package of improvements to equipment and facilities at the airport’s fire station. This investment, especially in this difficult economic climate, clearly demonstrates that safety remains the airport’s number one priority.”
