The Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation
CANSO – the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation – is the global voice of the companies that provide air traffic control, and represents the interests of Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) worldwide.
CANSO Members are responsible for supporting over 85% of world air traffic, and through our Workgroups, members share information and develop new policies, with the ultimate aim of improving air navigation services in the air and on the ground.
CANSO has an extensive network of Associate Members drawn from across the aviation industry, and we represent our members’ views in major regulatory and industry forums, including at ICAO, where we have official Observer status.
What We Do
Within the overall context of promoting safe and efficient Air Navigation Service provision, CANSO seeks to:- Maintain an international forum for the development & exchange of ideas on current ATM related issues and the formation of distinct CANSO policies and positions
- Develop an international network for ANS experts, to enable further information exchange between specific ANSPs and other stakeholders for the promotion of best practice within ATM
- Liaise with the other transport industry stakeholders, particularly the airlines, industry suppliers and the airports, to the overall benefit of the aviation industry
- Contribute to the continuous global air transport debate through the presentation and promotion of the ANSP perspective across the range of contemporary issues in the industry
- Represent the views and interests of Members at relevant international institutions, particularly ICAO
- Promote and support international legislation, regulations and agreements that strengthen the position of Members.
Global Activities
CANSO and its Members are involved in a wide range of activities in pursuit of the Organisation’s aims and objectives:
Standing Committees and Workgroups
CANSO has a number of Standing Committees and Workgroups which deliver policy and set standards on behalf of the Members. They bring together global experts to address issues of common interest, to exchange experience for the promotion of best practice and to develop specific policies across a broad spectrum of issues.
Standing Committees
- Safety Standing Committee
- Legal and Policy Standing Committee
- Operations Standing Committee
Workgroups
- Seamless Airspace
- Human Resources
- Benchmarking
- Environment
Networks/Task Forces
These are ad hoc bodies, established to examine specific issues. Under the Imagine 2010 programme they are referred to as ‘facilitated’ or ‘sponsored’ groups, and they seek to initiate targeted policies to guide ANSPs in their strategic development. Examples include the recent Customer Relations Task Force, and the Quality Management and AIS-AIM groups.
CANSO Networks are informal groups clustered around a particular subject – CANSO has an Insurance network and a Communications network.
CANSO Committees, Workgroups, and policy makers are brought together through regular meetings, and also the Global ATM Net, a unique extranet, linking the world’s ANSPs in a global communications platform for Air Traffic management. Accessible to CANSO Members only, the site aims to improve communications between ANSPs to support their closer cooperation and facilitate meetings and information/resource sharing.
Regional Activities
CANSO is currently divided into six regions: Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Eurasia, Europe, and the Middle East. Regional activities are held to augment global activity as required. CANSO maintains three Regional Offices – In Brussels, Jeddah, and Singapore. CANSO also has a Montreal Office from which it maintains a presence at ICAO.
CANSO’s Regional Offices coordinate activities at local level, within the framework of policies and positions agreed at CANSO global level. For example, the European Regional Office has had an influential input into the implementation rules for the SES, and the Asia-Pacific Office is working with industry stakeholders on the roll-out of ADS-B in the South China Sea.
Communications
CANSO’s communications department promotes the Organisation’s values and policy objectives. It works closely with the Association’s Regional Offices to coordinate messages and lobbying, and helps facilitate internal communications between Members.
