Cavotec bags AED 15 million contract for Muscat International AirportGlobal engineering group further expands footprint in the Middle East region with Muscat deal
Cavotec Middle East, the UAE-based subsidiary of global engineering group Cavotec MSL, has won an AED 15 million contract by Bahwan Engineering Company, the biggest MEP contracting company in the Sultanate of Oman and part of the Bahwan Group, for the design, supply, and installation of 95 pop-up pit systems at the new Muscat International Airport development in Oman. Cavotec’s pop-up pit systems have been chosen over conventional products due in large part to their advanced technology, reliability, and proven track record in the aviation industry.
The leading engineering group’s latest contract was signed between Bahwan Engineering Company and Cavotec Middle East in Muscat, whose pioneering pop-up solutions have been chosen involving Cowi Larsen JV as the project consultant and ADPi, the project managers for Oman’s Ministry of Transport and Communication.
Cavotec will also supply its Wibe Cable Support System to the development, adding to the firm’s portfolio for the Muscat International Airport project.
Commenting on the announcement of the multimillion-dirham deal, Mr. Juergen Strommer, Managing Director of Cavotec Middle East, said, “We are very honoured to have been chosen for the prestigious Muscat International Airport project due to the superior technology and dependability that our industry-leading airport management solution brings to the table. The selection of our products to support the airport’s expansion further cements our position as the leading supplier of sophisticated equipment suitable for a vast array of applications. We are deeply thankful to those who have come to trust the Cavotec brand.”
Following the inking of this contract, Cavotec’s pop-up pit systems can now be found in five different airports within the GCC region: Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, and Muscat and forms an integral part of a modern airport. The state-of-the-art pop-up pit system, composed of units that emerge from the tarmac when required and retract flush with the apron surface after use, is an innovative solution which can serve aircraft requirements on the ground safely and efficiently.
Cavotec MSL pop-up pit systems are used for storing such items as 400Hz cables, PCA hoses, potable water hoses, and technical services under the tarmac apron. When the aircraft is in the parking position or maintenance hangar, the pop-up system is deployed and raised to working level. Upon disconnection, Cavotec’s pop-up pits automatically retract to surface level. Cavotec’s in-ground systems supply aircraft with fuel, power, water and pre-conditioned air, eliminating the need for service vehicles, diesel generators, cables and hoses that typically cover much of the area around parked aircraft.
With the Muscat International Airport’s burgeoning air traffic and further anticipated growth in the Omani capital’s arrivals, the Ministry of Transport and Communication has embarked on an ambitious expansion initiative set to boost the aviation hub’s handling capacity to 12 million passengers annually. The first phase of this development is expected to be completed by 2014, with additional phases to follow thereafter.
This project marks another milestone in Cavotec’s growing presence in the Sultanate of Oman, where the company has provided the Port of Salalah with its ground-breaking vacuum mooring system called the Moormaster, which has been fully operational in the port for several years.
