Check-in desks are one of the first things that passengers experience on their journey and can therefore set the tone for the rest of their trip. It is important for the check-in desk set-up to be user friendly to both the airline’s representative and the passenger. The nature of the check-in desk also means that both users are likely to use the desk so having a set-up that maximises free desk space is paramount.
In this era where sedentary, desk-orientated jobs are most common and there are significant increases in work related musculoskeletal problems, ergonomic desk designs are highly desirable. Shift worker centric environments like Airports are no exception, in fact the need for versatile desking solutions is arguably at its greatest. No two employees are the same size and height so neither should their workstation set up be.
In the 2008/9 period, 9.3 million days were lost due to work related musculoskeletal problems. 3.5 million of these were back related, with a further 3.8 million attributed to the upper limb/neck. It was also identified that 44% of people sit in tiring or painful positions. There are simple and highly effective ways to correct the likely sources of these problems – through one’s workstation set up.
Mounting computer screens with a monitor arm allows the screen to be lifted to the user’s eye level, an ergonomic requirement. Rotation available at the head of the monitor arm further allows the screen to be tilted to the recommended 15°. And movement at the barrel and “elbow” of the arm position the screen at the user’s arm length from their body. These monitor arm functions are at the core of CBS’ product designs.
The Facility Manager at Adelaide Airport along with project architects Hassell, chose the CBS Zorro monitor arm for Adelaide Airport’s reservation counters. Zorro’s design differentiates itself from the rest of CBS’ monitor support range in the way the arm projects, allowing it to fix onto a post lower than the screen. This is ideal to reduce the visual clutter between airline representative and passenger. Zorro can also be contracted flush onto itself to save space, plus rotated on the post to show passengers on screen information.
CBS check-in desk and reservation counter solutions can be tailored to fit any passenger terminal and technology requirement. Be it self check-in, ticketing kiosks or passport control screening.
