The safety of airport passengers and employees lies within its’ control room. From this ‘nerve centre’ controllers keep an eye on the coming and going of passengers. Simple multi screen workstation adjustment is vital for controllers due to the shift working nature of their job. Additionally, like any desk orientated job an ergonomic set up is preferable.
In the 2008/9 period, 9.3 million days were lost due to work related musculoskeletal problems. 3.5 million of these were back related, with a further 3.8 million attributed to the upper limb/neck. It was also identified that 44% of people sit in tiring or painful positions. There are simple and highly effective ways to correct the likely sources of these problems – through one’s workstation set up.
CBS worked with Grupo Floria to fit out the multi-screen control room at Barcelona Metro. Controllers multiple monitors were supported on Wishbone arms, which can be height, angle and distance positioned to best suit users. Where necessary Wishbone arms had a rotation head where a monitor screen is fitted to allow the screen to be of landscape or portrait orientation. Arms were mounted onto CBS posts and toolbars, in a dual tier fashion, and fitted to Grupo Floria’s Renovatio furniture system, specifically developed for control room applications. While each workstation in Barcelona Control Room has 4 to 8 monitors the set up is user friendly and minimalist which further reduces visual clutter – an important factor to reduce distraction.
Similar set ups can be adapted for video conferencing lounges and multi screen passenger information announcement boards and displays.
