CNS/ATM

Cyrrus personnel possess many years of experience in managing CNS/ATM projects.

Key staff are former air traffic controllers, air traffic engineers or project managers from both military and civilian fields.  Consequently, Cyrrus has the requisite skills, expertise and in-depth practical understanding necessary to successfully manage major CNS/ATM projects both in the UK and overseas.

Cyrrus can provide regulatory and technical advice and design inputs for all CNS projects ranging from individual periodic equipment replacements and/or upgrades to sophisticated system designs for major airport developments at green field sites.  Optimal performance of CNS equipment is assured by conducting computer simulation of system designs whilst ensuring compliance with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPS) and national regulatory requirements.

Using advanced radar propagation modelling Cyrrus staff are able to provide detailed advice on Primary and Secondary Surveillance Radars issues and to conceptualise innovative solutions to Airports’ complex ATM programmes.

Recent integrated CNS/ATM projects have included:  London Oxford Airport - Runway upgrade and optimisation, Navigational Aid (navaid) system design, overall project management. Eleftherios Venizelos (Athens Airport) - Radar Data Distribution upgrade; Greenfield Site in the Middle East – concept design and layout for CNS/ATM.

CNS System Design and Project Realisation

By employing a systems-engineering approach, a broader and more rigorous view is taken of CNS System Design and Project Realisation.

Using proven project management processes, aligned to the Safety Management System required by regulatory authorities, we have delivered numerous successful projects on time and on budget for our Clients.

This systematic approach includes: establishing user requirements; system simulation and design; preparation of requirement specifications; tender evaluation and procurement; management of equipment installation and commissioning; technical safeguarding and the establishment of maintenance policy and procedures.

Cyrrus also undertakes navaid and radar flight trial management and evaluation using an industry standard software tool for radar performance analysis.

Cyrrus has recently conducted CNS project work for the following UK customers:  Liverpool John Lennon Airport - Remote Radar and Communications Data Transmission system design and implementation; Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield - Instrument Landing System design & upgrade; Serco Ltd at Scatsta - comprehensive CNS design and upgrade; Inverness Airport - Radar performance evaluation.

Cyrrus Ltd were commissioned to oversee the design, installation and management of a solution to facilitate a combined Radar Approach Control service for Liverpool and Doncaster Airports.

Operational and Technical Safeguarding; Navaid Modelling

Operational safeguarding ensures that Obstacle Limitation Surfaces are not compromised. Technical safeguarding ensures the integrity of navaids and greatly reduces the likelihood of a gradual degradation of the radio and radar signals.

It is essential that any proposed building developments in the vicinity of an airport are assessed to ensure that there is no adverse effect on the airport’s operation.  Operational safeguarding ensures that Obstacle Limitation Surfaces are not compromised. Technical safeguarding ensures the integrity of navaids and greatly reduces the likelihood of a gradual degradation of the radio and radar signals.

Regulating authorities expect to see evidence of adequate technical safeguarding; if the quality of service of the radio and radar signals reduces below acceptable limits, the ‘approval’ to radiate can be withdrawn until corrective measures have been taken.  Proactive technical safeguarding of the technical sites is strongly recommended.

Cyrrus has recently conducted Operational and Technical Safeguarding and Navaid Modelling for the following customers: BAE Systems and Raytheon Systems Ltd on behalf of NATS En-Route Ltd, Selex SI, Airbus UK, Bombardier Aerospace and London-Oxford Airports.

Airspace Design and Development

Cyrrus has the expertise and experience to research, design and progress complicated airspace change proposals from initiation through to implementation.

Such Airspace Design and Development programmes are comprehensive in nature and take account of supporting navigation infrastructure, environmental considerations and connectivity to the en-route airspace.

Cyrrus designs airspace that enables a well-organized, logical progression from the en-route structure, via standard arrival routes to simple and efficient instrument approach procedures and, eventually, to outbound standard instrument departures.

Successful projects have included: Eleftherios Venizelos - Athens Airport - Technical and design support for Airspace and Instrument Flight Procedure (IFP) development (16 procedures); Avinor, Norway – Design, development and integration of 10 Special Category 1 IFPs for 5 topographically very challenging airport locations in Norway; Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield and Norwich - Airspace design and Airspace Change Proposal management, Weston Executive Airport, Dublin - airspace change integration and IFP design.

Airspace Design and Development
Judicious application of ICAO design techniques resulted in a profile being developed where hitherto it was thought impractical for Category C aircraft to use this runway for Instrument Approaches.
