Glidepath Opens New Frontiers in Canada with Upgrade to Baggage Handling System in Toronto Rail StationThe Glidepath resume is expanding in more ways than one. In June, Glidepath signed a contract for an upgraded Baggage Handling System (BHS) for VIA Rail in Toronto’s Union Station that broadens the company's transportation system offerings in a significant way. The revitalisation of historic Union Station will include a full upgrade and replacement of VIA Rail’s BHS from the west ticket counters to the passenger loading platforms and the bag claim area. The Glidepath conveyor system will be reversible in order to support both Inbound and Outbound baggage operations. Glidepath’s system management software GlideView will ensure the safe and efficient operation of the new installation.
The team faces some exceptional challenges, including the installation of the new system in the exact location as the existing system without impacting customer service. “We developed a unique 12-phase approach to the installation to ensure VIA’s baggage handling operation is never compromised and the traveling public is not inconvenienced,” said Harry Carroll, Glidepath’s Regional Manager-Canada.
The project team worked well together according to the system designer. “The design, supply and installation of an effective luggage transportation system require blending the specific knowledge of the Owner, users/passengers, architects, consultants, contractors and luggage system suppliers. Glidepath is a strong company with many years of experience engineering and manufacturing state-of-the-art luggage systems to meet the needs of the travelling public. Supplying the luggage system at Union Station will add to Glidepath’s already excellent reputation,” said Andy Procktor, ARP Engineers.
Union Station is Glidepath’s first North American railway project and follows the successful installation of a new outbound BHS at the Kuala Lumpur In-City Railway Facility. Union Station is a bustling transportation hub and a highly visible historic structure in the heart of downtown Toronto. Glidepath is proud of its contribution to this important revitalization project.
