Finance and Economics
I was Corporate Treasurer at BAA, setting up loan and banking facilities pre privatisation and a 5-15 year financial forecasting model for use for treasury, strategic options and scenario planning. As Director of Economics and Regulation I led BAA input into 5 yearly review of airport charges at London Airports, and managed airline relations for charges and capital programme. Now I'm advising clients on economic regulation, airport capital planning, airport charges and aeronautical revenue, BAA financial structure and business prospects, benchmarking, revenue and charges forecasting at international airports, airline prospects, and airline negotiations on charges. I also have provided advice on economic impact studies to trade bodies and pro bono work on costs of disease for a leading epilepsy charity. I often work as an associate of First Economics.
Planning and Environment
My last job at BAA was as Planning Services Director, in charge of a team of 50 experts. I now advise on airport surface access issues (including the planning process and negotiations for rail links), aerodrome safeguarding, noise and blight schemes and noise management schemes, air quality and carbon/climate change at airports, statutory planning including expert witness and examinations in public, and facilities planning for terminal and airfield (including masterplans).
I have conducted work for the Omega project – a joint academia/industry initiative researching aviation’s environmental footprint.
ATC
Whilst at BAA I negotiated the 5 year NSL contract for seven airports; this involved extensive provisions for change of supplier as well as performance measures and incentive structures. I also dealt with Single European Sky issues on behalf of the airport’s trade body ACI Europe and was on the SESAR Joint Undertaking Board.
I now work with Helios Technology Ltd as an associate and advise clients on the UK ATC market – including airports, who want to ensure high performance value for money contracts, potential suppliers considering entering the market, and investors such as pension schemes and infrastructure funds. The work includes technology based business ideas, contract negotiation and advice, due diligence work, benchmarking of costs and performance, and project appraisal.
Aviation and Airport Training
I now manage the Airport School within Peregrine Academy, a new aviation training company based in Bournemouth. The Academy also offers ATC and flight operations training and prides itself on new teaching techniques, as advised by Bournemouth University, pooling of know-how across the three schools and cost-effective pricing with a variety of locations and courses on offer.
The airport school currently has twelve courses covering operational areas such as airfield management, business continuity, airport CDM, human factors, SMS, airside driver training, environment, aerodrome safeguarding, airside planning, traffic forecasting and surface access. Further training on management topics such as aeronautical revenue, capital planning, and performance standards is planned.
