Major increase for aviation in 2011

Air traffic in Swedish airspace increased by 8% during 2011 to over 706,000 aircraft movements during the past year. LFV also expects an increase in 2012, although somewhat lower.

Lars Ahlm is a trend analyst at LFV and sees several explanations for last year’s major increase in traffic. “The Swedish economy is strong and trade is booming, which means more business travel. We are also travelling a lot both inside and outside Sweden and are seeing an increased foreign interest in Swedish destinations”.

During 2011, domestic air travel and flyover traffic increased by over 7% while foreign traffic increased by over 9%. Flyover traffic represents flights, which do not start from or land in Sweden.

LFV’s prognosis for 2012 indicates continued growth for aviation, even if the increase is predicted to be considerably less than during 2011.

“We expect an increase of just over 1%. An early indicator of a reverse trend in traffic growth is usually freight and we are seeing that falling now. There is also some uncertainty about how the world economy is going to develop and the airlines are concerned about increased costs for aircraft fuel”, says Lars Ahlm.
