Rapiscan Systems, a leading supplier of security inspection systems,today announced that they have been awarded Best Innovator 2011/2012 for the Real Time Tomography (RTT) systemat the Airport Operators Association Annual Conference. The ceremony, which took place at the Hilton Metropole London, was attended by 300 delegates from across the industry, and recognises the successes of UK Airports and those companies working in the airports industry.

 

The RTT is a high speed, next generation baggage screening detection system that enables airports to automatically inspect checked passenger baggage for explosives and other potential threats. The system allows airports to screen up to 1,800 bags per hour while delivering high resolution 3D images to significantly improve the detection of potential threats and reducing delays in baggage handling. The RTT exploits a technology called Computed Tomography (CT) that has been traditionally used by hospitals to scan patients to create high resolution images.  The unique RTT system provides faster and more accurate bag screening than all currently installed hold baggage handling systems. It has been specifically designed to accurately detect an increased range of explosive threats and prohibited items, including liquid explosives when compared to the currently deployed CT systems, therefore providing high level of security and improving operational efficiency throughout many of today’s airports.

 

The Real Time Tomography (RTT) system from Rapiscan Systemswas selected as the winner by the AOA Board due to the dedication shown by the engineering team in taking this advanced technology, which has been in development for many years, starting at the University of Surrey in the late 1990s, to today’s airports to meet their screening requirements.
