Serco down-selected to compete for major Royal Navy training contract

Date : 15 July 2009

Serco has been down-selected to enter the next stage of the competition to provide comprehensive training services to the Royal Navy.

The 'Fleet Outsourced Activities Project' is designed to replace the current arrangement of skills-based training and training support, equipping naval recruits for life on board ship.  This highly valuable, ten year contract is due to be awarded in 2011 following a competitive dialogue process.

Serco will draw on its extensive operational and training support to the armed services and in-depth knowledge of the Royal Navy to meet the challenging requirements of the customer and deliver a highly competitive and innovative bid.

Our experience includes providing a wide range of support services to the Royal Navy at its three main naval bases - Portsmouth, Devonport and Faslane, and the provision of engineering and operational support to the Fleet Air Arm that help to keep the naval helicopter fleet flying , and, through our operation of the FRADU Hawk fleet, ensure naval personnel receive the very best combat training  at sea.

Serco is responsible for training Royal Navy, RAF and Army helicopter pilots on the state-of-the-art simulators at RAF Benson, preparing them for operations in Afghanistan, and we built and now manage the Joint Services Command and Staff College at Shrivenham.  We also have long experience of working with the US Military in the design and implementation of web-based learning for senior managers and the development of interactive analytical maintenance tools.

Commenting on the down-select decision, Tom Burnet, Managing Director of Serco's defence operations business, said:

"We are really excited about advancing to the next stage in this competition.  I believe we have a unique combination of experience and understanding, based on our long and successful track record of operational and training support to the armed forces and Royal Navy.  We will focus on helping the Navy to improve standards in training by delivering innovation and better value for money."

Serco is currently in discussion with a number of expert subcontractors to ensure the best possible team to deliver what the Royal Navy needs and deserves, including Thales, Logica and TQ Education.  A further announcement on the full team will be made in due course.
