TagMaster has supplied its RFID systems to several installations at airports around the world, resulting in increased security, efficiency and convenience for the airports and their travellers. Stated below are a few examples of how TagMaster’s RFID system has benefited airport operations.
Convenient Access Control for Taxis and Buses at..
Arlanda Airport:
Summary
Arlanda Airport wanted to restrict access to the terminal lanes, facilitating the circulation of taxis, shuttle buses and other bus service companies. They needed a system that was technically advanced as well as reliable in order to keep up traffic flow by the terminals. Due to this they wanted a system that could identify at long range and let the vehicles pass at high speed.
Challenge
To automate the control of airport charges for buses and taxis using the terminals, and in a convenient way authorize access to commercial traffic.
Solution
By integrating the TagMaster RFID system with the barriers, TagMaster provides quick and convenient access to the restricted lanes by the airport terminals. Each shuttle bus/vehicle authorized to access the lanes were equipped with ID-tags from TagMaster. Thanks to long-range identification at high speed, the vehicles can keep up traffic flow by the terminals. Airport management has obtained a dependable and accurate way of charging all commercial traffic carrying passengers or goods to the airport.

Access Control for private vehicles at Arlanda Airport
Summary
Travellers benefit from convenient access control to the Sky City parking garage at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. Thanks to the TagMaster RFID system, frequent flyers save both time and money parking their cars without credit cards or cash. The small size TagMaster ID-tag gives the driver hands-free access to the garage and automatic debiting of parking fees to a specific account or invoicing address.
Challenge
To improve the usage rate of parking spots close to the airport terminals, Arlanda Parking decided to encourage the most frequent flyers to save time by parking conveniently and fast in the Sky City garage. A co-operation was established between Arlanda Parkering and SAS Euro Bonus to get access to the Gold members, which are most likely to use the parking facilities close to the terminals. With positive experience from several access control installations at Swedish airports, system integrator Swarco was assigned to integrate TagMaster’s longrange RFID system with the parking system from SkiData. The integrated systems already keep terminal lanes free from private vehicles, and form the basis of automatic debiting of terminal charges at Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
Solution
To provide the driver with hands-free access, the car is identified by means of a TagMaster ID-tag mounted inside the windscreen. TagMaster long-range readers, installed close to the barriers, instantly identify the ID-tag as the car approaches. The reader, connected to a central database, commands the barrier to open if the ID-tag is verified as valid. The arrival and departure time is logged and the parking fee is automatically charged the customer’s account as the vehicle exits the parking garage.

RFID tagged tax-free trolleys at Schiphol Airport
Summary
To keep tax-free trolleys in the shopping areas, Schiphol Airport has installed the TagMaster RFID system that prevents travellers from taking the trolleys into elevators and through automatic doors. The effect was quickly evident, trolleys are always available and losses are minimized.
Business Benefit
Schiphol Airport divides their trolleys into two categories, one for luggage and one smaller size for the tax-free shopping areas. The luggage trolleys have access to the whole airport whereas the shopping trolleys need to be kept within the shopping areas. To prevent the 5,000 shopping trolleys being spread around the airport, Schiphol needed a system for automatic identification of the trolleys. The main concern was how to prevent travellers from bringing the trolleys into the elevators and down to the platforms and terminals.
Solution
The solution was to mount a total of 5,000 MarkTags, one on each shopping trolley in a slightly tilted position, enabling TagMaster readers to identify each trolley approaching doors and elevators to the shopping area. Each elevator is equipped with a TagMaster reader, which is mounted out of sight in the ceiling space. The reader instantly detects if a trolley enters the elevator and prevents the doors from closing. A sign for the traveller outside and inside of the elevator says “Please remove tax-free trolley from the elevator”. To prevent travellers from bringing a trolley through the automatic doors that separate the shopping areas with the rest of the airport, a TagMaster reader was mounted at each passage. When a shopping trolley approaches a sliding door, for example, a similar sign says “Please do not pass this door with a tax-free trolley” and the door stays closed as long as the trolley is close to the door. A total of 6 elevators and 10 automatic doors are equipped with TagMaster WiseMan readers.
Conclusion
The system has been very effective for keeping the shopping trolleys within the right area. It is a very cost effective installation as there is no need to have people searching for shopping trolleys and the loss of trolleys has been drastically reduced. The installation also ensures that a higher level of customer service is achieved as trolleys are always available at the right locations.
