Company Profile

  • SARSYS Surface Volvo Friction Tester (SVFT)

The SARSYS Surface Volvo friction tester (SVFT) is a Volvo V70 car combined with an installed system designed for measuring friction on airports runways, taxiways and highways. The system operates via a measuring wheel, mechanically geared to one of the rear main wheels of the base car.

Friction against the runway surface, in combination with the vertical load on the measuring wheel, creates forces on the measuring wheel mechanism that are constantly measured by the electronic sensor system. Signals from the sensor system are then processed in the SVFTs measuring computer system.

By processing these signals, the computer continuously calculates the friction coefficient, the friction number and the relation between the horizontal and vertical forces acting on the measuring wheel. The computer in the SVFT is pre-programmed to measure and report runway friction in accordance with standards and regulations issued by ICAO, FAA, etc.

The result is then shown on the screen in a colour graph or can be printed on paper in diagram form and figures. The data can also be transmitted to other receivers by means of radio link or PC-USB.

    Test and approvals:

    • Approved by Swedish Civil Aviation Authority, Swedish Transport Agency
    • Approved by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
    • Approved and CE-certified (2006/42/EC)
    • Listed
  • SARSYS Surface Friction Tester Transporter (SFTT)

The SARSYS Friction Tester Transporter (SVFT) is a Volkswagen Transporter van combined with an installed system designed for measuring friction on airports runways, taxiways and highways. The system operates via a measuring wheel, mechanically geared to one of the rear main wheels of the base van.

Friction against the runway surface, in combination with the vertical load on the measuring wheel, creates forces on the measuring wheel mechanism that are constantly measured by the electronic sensor system. Signals from the sensor system are then processed in the SFTTs computer system.

The data can also be transmitted to other receivers by means of radio link or PC-link.

The self-watering system is equipped with a extra large water tank, for measuring 10 000 meters without re-filling the water. The open and large space in the back of the car gives space for installing other systems and tools that can be used in connection with runway inspection etc.

    Test and approvals:

    • Approved by Swedish Civil Aviation Authority, Swedish Transport Agency
    • Approved by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
    • Listed by ICAO
  • SARSYS Surface Trailer Friction Tester (STFT)

The measuring system is the famous SARSYS Single Transmission system used in the SARSYS Surface Friction Tester. It is primarily designed for friction measuring on airport runways and taxiways, but can also be used for measuring on roads. The STFT is programmed to measure in accordance with regulations issued by authorities such as ICAO and FAA and designed for both operational and maintenance measuring. The system consists of a measuring wheel which is mechanically geared to the right hand wheel on the trailer. The gear ratio is such that, when travelling along the runway the measuring wheel cannot follow the runway surface freely, but rolls with a certain slip.

    Test and approvals:

    • Approved by Swedish Civil Aviation Authority
    • Listed by ICAO
    • Approved by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
    • Approved and CE-certified (2006/42/EC)
    • Listed by CAP 683

    TSense

    Next-gen sensor technology

    Features:

    • GPS tracking
    • ambient & surface temperature
    • humidity & dew point
    • CRFI/CFME
    • database-backed
    • searchable
    • Core Functionality

TSense fuses all inspection vehicle sensors – GPS, ambient/surface temperature, humidity/dew point, and continuous & spot friction devices – and logs the collected information to an industry-standard database for later analysis.

  • Runway Friction-Measuring Computer System

The computer system (STMC) for SARSYS friction testers (SVFT, SFTT and STFT) comprises the following components:

    • Windows based measuring computer
    • Touchscreen laptop
    • Wireless or wired connection
    • Preamplifier – measurement computer

The Windows based touchscreen measuring computer processes the signals from the sensors. The computer controls the measuring procedures in accordance with the pre-programmed measuring modes. The computer is controlled either with the buttons on the touchscreen or (in the SFT) with keys on the cars steering wheel. Complete measuring operation can thus be run without the need for the operator to take hands from the steering wheel. The touchscreen is normally attached to a bracket close to the operator.

ICAO and FAA Runway Measuring Programmes
The SVFT, SFTT and STFT computer is pre-programmed for complete measurements in accordance with ICAO and FAA regulations as basic measuring modes:

Measuring according to ICAO rules – performing a complete measuring run in both directions on each line of the centerline, the SVFT, SFTT and STFT computer divides the runway in thirds and calculates the average friction number for each third, based on both runs.

Measuring in accordance with FAA – in addition, the measuring speed is presented in diagram form. Average friction is calculated for a distance which can be selected.

  • SOFT (SARSYS Surface Opel Friction Tester)

The SFTT (SARSYS Surface Opel Friction Tester) is friction measurement system built into a Opel Mokka, Buick Encore, Vauxhall Mokka, Chevrolet Trax, Holden Trax. The system offers reliable measurements for taxiways, runways and highways and uses a measuring wheel linked to a rear main wheel.

As with the SVFT, SFTT, the STMC computer system monitors the friction sensor and computes the friction number, friction coefficient and the relationship between the vertical and horizontal forces acting on the wheel. The STMC computer is preconfigured to provide standardised measurements accruing to FAA and ICAO requirements. Results may be displayed on the integrated colour screen, printed onto paper or passed for further analysis by PC or radio-link.

The SOFT features an water tank for approx 7 000 meters of friction measurement on a single tank of water. The vehicle has the capacity to allow additional systems and equipment to be installed for runway inspection and other applications.
