The Federal Aviation Administration recently announced that DEN will receive a $4,275,096 Airport Improvement Program grant to help fund planning and environmental studies for a potential 7th runway.

Specifically, the studies will analyze the need for an additional runway including when flight operations would warrant the new runway, possible locations, and potential environmental impacts. The study could also determine that a 7th runway is not needed at this time.

The airport has experienced consistent growth over the past several years and is expectd to reach 100 million passengers in the next 810 years,” said DEN CEO Phil Washington. “It is in the best interest for the airport and our airline partners that we complete the environmental study to determine if and when a 7th runway might be needed and develop mitigation plans to address potential environmental impacts so we can properly prepare for the future.

The planning and environmental studies will take place in partnership with the FAA and will include an opportunity for public comment. The studies will begin this fall and will take approximately four years to complete. DEN will provide more information once the studies begins and the public comment period opens.
