The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) hosted the ICAO Global Implementation Support Symposium 2022 at the Hilton Istanbul Bomonti Hotel & Conference Center from June 28th to July 1st.

People from the aviation community attended the symposium that was held following the Covid-19 pandemic to evaluate the most recent technological advancements, significant projects, and collaborative efforts to support the aviation industry’s recovery, innovation, flexibility, sustainable development, and operational solutions.

Within the scope of the symposium, the agreement “Training Centre Accreditation within Global Training Agreement” was signed between ACI and iGA. Kadri Samsunlu, CEO of iGA Istanbul Airport, Luis Felipe de Oliveira, General Director of ACI World, and Juan Carlos Salazar, Secretary-General of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) also attended the signature ceremony.

Within the scope of the contract signed with ACI, iGA Istanbul Airport became the newest partner of the ACI’s training program through its training structure, the iGA Academy. In this way, ACI and iGA can offer all regionally determined courses accredited by ACI through iGA. According to the agreement, iGA will both be able to provide these courses to their staff and market this training to course attendees from other applying countries.

Kadri Samsunlu, the CEO of iGA Istanbul Airport, made the following remark at the signature ceremony: “As iGA Istanbul Airport, we continue to represent Turkey successfully in the aviation industry. As you know, rules in the aviation industry are extremely important, and training always makes a big difference in the course of learning these rules. With this approach, we introduced an international training programme into our country by signing an agreement with ACI. With this agreement, we convey our knowledge of and experience in the aviation field to the next generations and contribute to the development of the sector by means of training, being the biggest airport in the world and the most important global aviation hub in the region.

Luis Felipe de Oliveira, General Director of ACI World made the following explanation: “iGA Istanbul Airport is one of our member airports and also Kadri Samsunlu has joined us recently as an Executive Board Member of ACI World. We strive to expand our perspective to enable airports to provide better service for their passengers. We aim to double our number of passengers by the next 20 years. As an umbrella organisation of aviation, we continue our efforts with ICAO and other organizations to form a common basis. Airports represent 60 percent of the work site in the industry. Therefore, we are proud to contribute to the socio-economic development and improvement of the system with our education programs.

Juan Carlos Salazar, the Secretary-General of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, touched on the targets of airports for a net-zero emission in the signature ceremony saying, “As ICAO, we continue our efforts to reduce global carbon emission. Our negotiations to achieve a net-zero emission by 2050 continue. I would like to state that we have all the technical requirements to keep this promise. Airports and airline businesses declared that they commit a net-zero emission by 2050. Great responsibilities fall on governments to put long-term targets into effect during the process after this time.”
