International Certificate for Istanbul Airport’s “Carbon Management”
As Turkey’s gateway to the world, Istanbul Airport was awarded an international certificate as a result of its efforts to manage and reduce its carbon footprints as part of its environment and sustainability program. Istanbul Airport, which has fulfilled its obligations within the framework of the Airport Carbon Accreditations commenced by Airport Council International in 2009, has obtained a “Level One Carbon Emission Certificate”, thereby becoming included in the list of “climate-friendly airports” of Airport Council International.
Within the frame of the work completed, the sources of the greenhouse gas and the calculation methodologies have been identified at Istanbul Airport. All of the energy consumption data of the airport has been traceable and all of its greenhouse gas emissions have been computable since the date the airport was opened. The Greenhouse Gas Emission Management System applications at the airport were audited by inspectors approved by Airport Council International, in line with the requirements of the Airport Carbon Accreditation program and Istanbul Airport obtained a certificate which is of importance in the international arena.

Thanks to the measures taken against COVID-19, Istanbul Airport became one of only two airports in the world that was certified with the “5-Star COVID-19 Airport” rating, in addition to the “5-Star Airport” Skytrax rating.
Istanbul Airport, which received the “Airport Pandemic Certificate” issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, and then signed the “COVID-19 Aviation Health Safety Protocol” published by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), before the Skytrax awards, also became the first airport in the world to obtain the “Airport Health Accreditation” certificate presented by Airports Council International (ACI).
The World Airport Awards are the most coveted quality accolades for the airport industry, often referred to as the Oscars of the aviation industry, and are a global benchmark of airport excellence. Travellers across the globe take part each year in the world’s largest airport passenger satisfaction survey to decide the winners.
