The Riga Airport development project – RIX Airport City was presented this week at the world’s leading airport development investment conference Global Airport Development World in Amsterdam.

“New requirements in the investment environment related to essential sustainability factors are emerging and getting stronger. Attracting financing for large-scale projects requires a new understanding of a responsible circular approach to the use of resources, sustainable planning, sustainable and renewable materials in construction. Considering that we are at the beginning of the development of RIX Airport City, we have the opportunity to base it on the principles of sustainability from the very beginning,” Laila Odiņa, Chairperson of the Board of Riga Airport, said at the forum.

By announcing an international competitive dialogue to attract investors and developers, Riga Airport has started the implementation of the strategically important RIX Airport City project with the aim of creating an advanced airport city of the future within ten years. Together with the expanded passenger terminal and the Rail Baltica high-speed railway connection, it will provide not only traditional aviation services, but will create an environment for the development of various types of business, offer multimodal transport options and contribute to the population and the economy of the region as a whole. The contract with the successful tenderer is planned to be signed by the end of 2023; the forecast amount of investment for the development of RIX Airport City is up to 300 million euros.

“We are honoured for the opportunity to be full participants and invited speakers at the global airport development financing forum, where airport operators, banks, investment funds, government representatives, private and public partnership companies, aviation market experts and business strategists meet. Our presence at such an event clearly marks the growth potential of Riga Airport in the Northern European region,” Laila Odiņa, Chairperson of the Board of Riga Airport, talks about the participation in the GAD World forum.

This year’s agenda of the forum pays special attention to the aspects of sustainability, which is becoming an important argument in attracting investments, as well as the resilience of the aviation business in crises, the diversification of airport revenues, as well as the reduction of carbon emissions. These topics are discussed within the framework of the forum both in panel discussions and in individual conversations between airport representatives and investors.
