KOREA’S INCHEON AIRPORT INTRODUCES THE WORLD’S FIRST AI BASED SECURITY SCREENING SYSTEM

For a safer and a more convenient departure process, Incheon International Airport plans to apply AI based imagery analysis at their departure gates. This ‘AI based X-Ray Automatic Inspection system’ will be test operated at Incheon International Airport’s Departure Gate 2 (Terminal 2).

The airport’s ‘Automatic X-Ray Inspection system’ will apply AI technology to the existing security screening procedure. Automatic inspection of materials such as sharp objects, tools, firearms, and other prohibited items will be possible, enabling the inspector to make a more precise decision as to whether additional screening is required.

Since the current automatic system can only recognize certain types of objects, further developments are crucial for it to be able to identify all harmful objects. In order to elevate the accuracy of inspection, the system will have an improved machine learning capabilities with deep neural networks, akin to the fundamental pattern recognition activity of the human brain. By building an AI platform based on the deep learning technology, it allows the computer to process data to avoid or learn from previous mistakes. Once fully developed, the ‘Automatic X-Ray Inspection system’ will enable Incheon International Airport to obtain a swifter and more precise inspection as well as advancement in the security screening sector.
