Middle East Airports Lead Global Movement Towards Sustainability

Airports today are increasingly being designed and built to green specifications and the Middle East is leading this effort. In line with the global efforts to fight climate change and reduce carbon emissions, the aviation industry has taken extreme measures to support these initiatives – from lower fuel consuming aircraft engines, better air traffic control (ATC) to reduce flight paths, energy efficient ground handling equipment and of course, greener terminal buildings.

Nowhere is this effort more visible than in the US$32 billion Al Maktoum International Airport development, which upon completion will be one of the world’s largest airports with an ultimate capacity exceeding 220 million passengers and 16 million tonnes of cargo per annum. From a dedicated solar plant at the facility to limit its carbon footprint and feed extra power directly into the grid, to the establishment of carbon baselines, environmentally friendlier firefighting equipment and initiatives to collect waste, recycle and limit power usage, Dubai Airports is committed to be a responsible member of the global community.

BUILDING SUSTAINABLE FUTURE AIRPORTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman of Dubai Airports, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline Group, Airport Show serves as an annual gathering of the region’s key aviation stakeholders, giving them an opportunity to meet and network with future partners to support the region’s over US$100 billion airport expansion and development programmes.
Key consultants and contractors working on mega-airport developments across the Middle East attend the event each year, with officials representing over 200 international airports participating at the show this May. The event also hosts over 150 regional airport officials who will meet with exhibitors to upcoming projects and tenders – providing the ideal platform to promote green and sustainable solutions in the aviation industry.
