That’s right, we’ve been helping keep the lights on at Europe’s busiest airport. The team at Heathrow are currently installing some new (AGL’s) Airfield Ground Lights and they called us in to get the cables for these important illuminations across their runways safely.

What did we do?

To help with the safe and long lasting installation of the AGLs we created chases in the concrete (16mm x 50mm), giving the cables a safe, protected channel to run thorough. We then sealed these up safely and securely with hot bitumen. Why was it tricky?

We love working on aviation projects and taking on the special set of challenges they bring. As our airfield works manager, puts it:

“Working on the busiest Airport in Europe can sometimes be challenging for all concerned on the infrastructure team, so flexibility in the methodology has to be designed in.”

In this case the work not only had to be completed overnight within the airport’s engineering hours, but the sealed chases also needed to be fully cured in time for the first departure of the day. Luckily, we love rising to the challenge.

How did we do it?

Safety and productivity were going to be crucial, but we had just the tool. Having recently invested in a new bit of kit that speeds up the process, we were able to deliver quick, high quality sealing.

Imported from abroad, our new machine is great for projects with a short working window and, can cut down on the manpower needed. It’s also brilliantly mobile so can be as flexible as your project requires. At Heathrow it helped us get the runways ready for take off. If you’d like to talk about what it could do for your project, do get in touch.
