Colas won the prestigious Technology Award at the 2016 Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) Awards which took place last Thursday. In addition to winning the Technology award, Colas was also commended in two further award categories.Colas’ Project YELLOW won the CIHT Technology Award and was commended in the Health & Safety at Work category; whilst Colas’ Remote Controlled Traffic Management Access Gates were commended in the CIHT Innovation Award category. The CIHT Technology Award recognises excellence in the application of technology within the industry, whilst the CIHT Health & Safety at Work award recognises outstanding examples of new developments that make a significant contribution to the health and safety of employees across the sector.

As a leader in innovation, research and design, Colas’ Project YELLOW applies the latest advances in technology to reduce the risk of Impact Protection Vehicle (IPV) collisions. Project YELLOW is the second generation IPV collision warning system which utilises thermal cameras, video analytics and audible collision warning systems for those Traffic Management operatives working in and around its IPVs. It also provides visual collision warnings for road users.

The CIHT Innovation Award recognises innovative problem solving within the highways and transportation industry. Colas’ Remote Controlled Traffic Management Access Gates were developed to safeguard Traffic Management operatives by allowing them to manage vehicle entries to work sites from a distance, effectively removing them from the direct proximity of any dangerous vehicular activity. The battery-powered remote controlled gates were designed by Colas in collaboration with Solar and Electric Gates Limited.

Colas Chief Executive, Lee Rushbrooke, and Executive Director for Strategy and Development, Carl Fergusson, accepted the awards. Carl commented: “We harness creativity and innovation at Colas and are obviously delighted that our work has been recognised by the CIHT and the wider industry. Our success at this year’s CIHT Awards is a testament to our continued focus on safety and innovation.”

Colas also sponsored the CIHT Skills Development Award and Lee Rushbrooke presented the award to the winner. Lee said: “Colas is passionate about developing the skills of our workforce and meeting the needs of the industry. It was a pleasure to sponsor and present the award at this year’s CIHT Award ceremony. At Colas we are committed to innovation, road worker safety and skills development. I’m absolutely delighted that we won the CIHT Technology Award, and were also commended in both the CIHT Innovation and Health and Safety categories.”
