Terminal and Facilities Planning
Our planning service minimises risks against changes in market conditions, enabling space to be used as required to meet short and longer term needs. To safeguard and maximise operational life, we design to the appropriate international standards on the landside, allowing for cost efficient expansion of terminal buildings while considering access and development opportunities. We can also supply risk assessment, emergency planning, construction planning and value engineering.
The Group's expertise and track record in terminal design management, including identifying the appropriate design and procurement process, helps to ensure that all aspects of the facility are available on time and to the pre-determined budget. We make significant use of modelling and use our own state of the art design programs to increase the accuracy and efficiency of the design process which gives the client a greater freedom of input.
We have acted as team leaders for the redevelopment and rejuvenation of major international airports, including the expansion of Hong Kong International Airport
We are experts in planning and designing airspace and runways, ranging from airspace assessment and safeguarding, to the design of airfield systems. We have undertaken pavement assessment, design of emergency repairs and design of airside movement areas, runways and their extensions. We also have a track record in providing cost effective design and construction solutions for associated airfield communications systems, roads, pavements, bridges and tunnels.
Simulation and Modelling
Our aviation team can draw upon highly experienced modelling teams, with experience ranging from London Heathrow’s Terminal 5 rail station and Manchester Airport, to New York’s new Yankee Stadium.
We use CAST terminal airport simulation software, a custom tailored modelling tool to model highly realistic passenger behaviour, providing instantaneous analysis and 3D visualisation. CAST is the preferred modelling tool of airport operators such as BAA and Fraport.
We also have experience using SIMMOD, an airport and airspace modelling software suite. This industry standard analysis tool is used to simulate current and proposed airport and airspace operations.

Airfield – Pavements and Aprons
We offer the full range of airfield pavement design (structural and geometrical) and pavement assessment services. We are fully versed in the major pavement design methods and have applied these to deliver cost-effective pavement and overlay designs at many civil and military airports.
We cover the full project cycle, from feasibility stage through to delivering detailed design of airfield pavements and integration with other airport-related infrastructure. Many projects relate to upgrading airfields to handle the new Airbus A380, such as at Los Angeles International Airport.
Aeronautical Ground Lighting, Signage and Markings
Mott MacDonald offers the specialist engineering skills involved in AGL design. Designs can be tailored to meet the requirements of the ICAO Annex 14 or local standard. This would include approach, runway, taxiway and apron related lighting. Apron floodlighting solutions and stand guidance systems can also be designed along with airfield signage and markings.
Ground Support and Associated Facilities
Mott MacDonald provides an independent service in evaluating requirements and detailing performance specifications for ground support facilities plus the full range of both ramp and hangar operations. The engineering team works closely with the airport planning and design team to provide a capability that covers upgrading gates to accommodate widebody aircraft through to baggage handling, refueling systems, apron floodlighting, apron guidance systems and aircraft parking area design.

Structural and Civil, Mechanical and Electrical

We provide mechanical and electrical engineering expertise at airports for lighting requirements, power management and distribution, standby power requirements and ventilation and air conditioning. Our team supplies mechanical and electrical engineering capabilities in respect of heating requirements, hot and cold water services, fire detection, fire alarms and fire suppression, building management systems, escalators, travellators and passenger boarding bridge systems.
Hong Kong International Airport
Mott MacDonald was responsible for engineering the design of the 550,000m2 terminal building as part of the airport master plan. Due for completion in 2030 the project will have the capacity to carry some 50 million passengers each year.
Our aviation specialists provided facilities planning and engineering design for the North Satellite Concourse, which accommodates ten narrow-body aircraft gates. We are now engaged in developing concepts for a remote facility in the midfield area.
London Heathrow Terminal 5As one of BAA’s first-tier integrated suppliers, Mott MacDonald acted as lead designer responsible for all substructures, foundations, rail assurance services, tunnel advice plus project and programme management for T5.
Making Terminal 5 accessible is vital to its success and Mott MacDonald has been instrumental in bringing people to this new development.
Airside Road Tunnels at Heathrow Terminal 5
At London Heathrow the 1.2km, twin bore airside road tunnels (ART) – at a diameter of 8.8m – are the largest of the five new Terminal 5 tunnels and required particularly delicate tunnelling. The ART crosses the existing Piccadilly Line tunnel with 3m clearance, and the Heathrow Express tunnel with 5m clearance. Mott MacDonald was responsible for both.
Baggage Handling Systems
Efficient processing of baggage and security screening ensures airports remain competitive and customers receive the service they deserve. In developing innovative baggage handling solutions, our aviation team evaluates system redundancy and robustness, equipment utilisation levels and incorporates hold baggage screening technology to comply with the latest airport security regulations.
We help clients by developing concept solutions at the facilities planning stage and performance requirements allowing procurement from specialist suppliers. We also assist with tender evaluation, suppliers design integ-ration, site installation monitoring, and witnessing final acceptance testing.
Airport Security Systems
We can provide airport security know-how, from initial review to full design, independently, or to support an airport development team. Our approach to planning airport security systems is a four point plan: SAFE: It must be sustainable in the environment in which it operates, affordable in terms of capital and operating costs, flexible to accommodate changes in equipment and the surrounding environment, and effective in functioning within the regulatory framework contributing to the airport's overall security plan.
Our depth of experience in airport multi-modal access is illustrated at London Heathrow with the design of several road improvements projects to keep Heathrow operating with minimal delays during peak periods.
We understand the demand, capacity and environmental issues concerning the surface and sub-surface access, through multi-modal transport modelling we are able to plan and implement efficient and future looking systems that can increase efficiencies and minimise impact.

Heathrow Terminal 5
We acted as design engineer for all the £4.3 billion project’s sub-structures and foundations and managed rail systems integration and provided assurance of quality completion to stakeholders – London Underground, Heathrow Express Operating Company, BAA and Network Rail – before handover for operation. Among the tasks undertaken is the 1.7km long Piccadilly Line extension, connect-ing to the Piccadilly Line near the central terminal. Similarly, the Heathrow Express extension takes the express rail link from the existing station at the central terminal area to the new rail station under the T5 building
