Tailor Made Systems Ltd (TMS) have extensive experience of the measurement of lighting system performance. TMS has been involved with airfield lighting since 1991 when the company was commissioned by the UK Civil Aviation Authority to study the photometric performance of AGL systems. The MALMS Mobile Airfield Light Monitoring System has been developed using the knowledge and experience gained in the UK research program.

Mobile Airfield Light Monitoring System (MALMS)

MALMS provides INDEPENDENT information for both regulatory authorities and airfield operators in a fast and efficient manner. MALMS measures both high intensity inset and elevated runway and taxiway fittings. It has been designed to measure photometric performance against the criteria for beam intensity and orientation defined in ICAO Annex 14, using the test methodology that Annex 14 specifies.

MALMS is therefore suitable to confirm compliance with ICAO, FAA and National Standards. It also provides information to identify problems, develop maintenance strategies and produce work schedules and maintenance reports.

The first MALMS system was operational in 1995 and is widely recognized as the best photometric measurement system available. A policy of continual development is designed to ensure that this leading position is maintained. So why do airports choose MALMS for photometric testing as part of their preventative maintenance system:

Accuracy and Measurement Method – MALMS calculates an accurate measurement of main beam intensity (Cd) using high quality MALMS photometers, mounted such that they are in the main beam area that they are measuring. The size and shape of the light array is designed specifically to enable measurements to be taken across the main beam area in the most accurate manner.

Independent – TMS is an Employee owned and managed company that was founded in 1984. MALMS has an excellent reputation with Regulators, Airports and Airfield Lighting Companies for being the best airfield lighting photometric testing system.

Proven Accuracy and Reliability – MALMS has been tested to ensure compliance with ICAO and FAA standards to ensure optimum accuracy. With many systems in use around the world, the system has demonstrated its reliability.

Ease of Use – MALMS has been designed to be easily and effectively operated by most airfield staff. It includes many automatic checks to assist the driver / operator, to prevent incorrect use and compensate for inaccurate driving.

Self-Testing – MALMS incorporates many automatic monitoring and sophisticated quality checks to ensures that optimum data quality is maintained always. With the data collected TMS can provide high quality customer support.

Vehicle Independent – MALMS is mounted on a specially designed trailer, which provides a stable measurement platform that can be used with any vehicle without the requirement for additions to, or modification of, the vehicle; apart from towing hitch and electrical connection. The system is very robust, can be set-up without the need for tools and incorporates a safe transit position to minimise the risk of FOD.

MALMS Customers – MALMS is the system chosen by a majority of airports world-wide for inspection and testing of their airfield visual aids. Reference list of airports that own their own MALMS Photometric Test equipment is attached. Over 1000 more have used MALMS to perform Photometric testing as a paid service performed by TMS (in every continent).

  • MALMS Engineer

MALMS™ Engineer has been developed following a number of incidents where airfield ground lighting fixtures (AGL) has suffered mechanical failures that have resulted in aircraft being damaged.

MALMS™ Engineer incorporates a work scheduling and reporting tool that may be operated independently or integrated with an airports asset management system.

MALMS™ Engineer may be used on its own or integrated with the MALMS™ range of photometric test products and MALMS™ Cleaner to deliver the MALMS™ Differential Maintenance Strategy.

Adopting MALMS™ Engineer will provide airports with the assurance that all their light fittings are being inspected and maintained in compliance with ICAO annex 14, FAA AC 150/5340-26B and FAA Engineering Brief #83, In-pavement Light Fixture Bolts – mandatory for all airport projects funded with federal grant monies.

    MALMS™ Engineer:

    • Supports the provision of airfield lighting inspection and maintenance services in accordance with best practices leading to better standards of runway maintenance.
    • Moving map supports rapid airfield navigation and location / recording of faults.
    • MALMS™ Engineer facilitates airfield lighting asset management and supports many of the recommendations set down in international standards.
    • MALMS™ Engineer provides the means to demonstrate that an airport is operating safely.
    • Replaces paper recording methods with an accurate electronic solution.
    • Extensive reporting to alert management with information concerning asset performance, list of work undertaken as well as outstanding or overdue maintenance.
  • MALMS Manual Cleaner

The MALMS Manual Cleaner is now in use at Manchester Airport in the UK. Using the same cleaning technology as our fully automatic cleaner, this cleaner however does require a human operator to perform the cleaning actions.
