Heraklion International Airport

Heraklion International Airport “Nikos Kazantzakis” is the primary airport on the island of Crete, Greece, and the country’s second busiest airport after Athens International Airport. It is located about 5 km east of the main city centre of Heraklion, near the municipality of Nea Alikarnassos.

It is the second most important Greek airport. It is named after the author Nikos Kazantzakis, who is recognized as one of the most important contemporary Greek writers and one of the most translated globally. From 1945 to 1948, he was the president of the Society of Greek Writers. Heraklion State airport “N. Kazantzakis” operates daily, all year round on a 24-hour basis. It is 2 km away from the city centre, in the area of Nea Alikarnassos. The management and operation entity of the State Airport is the Civil Aviation Service.

A new airport for Heraklion, located 39 km to the south-east of the city at Kasteli, is under construction and due to open by 2025. Once completed, the new Kasteli International Airport will replace the current Heraklion International Airport as the hub for central Crete.
