BH International Airport is once again recognized for reducing greenhouse gas emissions

In order to obtain accreditation for carbon emissions at level 2, it was necessary to demonstrate projects to reduce emissions, such as the use of 100% clean electricity

After being considered a Green Airport, during the Annual Assembly Conference & Exhibition ACI-LAC 2022, held in Buenos Aires (Argentina), Belo Horizonte International Airport receives the renewal of its carbon emissions accreditation, at level 2, by the Airport Council International (ACI). This is the third time that the terminal has been certified for meeting all the necessary requirements for reducing greenhouse gas emission sources, which went from 2,480 tons in the first year of participation in the program, in 2017, to 584.6 tons in 2021.

“Winning this certification shows our commitment to sustainability, especially with regard to effective actions aimed at gradual decarbonization, with clear objectives and goals to achieve carbon neutrality. In the last week, we also won the Green Airport seal and all this promotes our position as the most sustainable airport in the country”, emphasizes the CEO of BH Airport, Kleber Meira.

To renew the accreditation, the airport presented a series of projects that prove its commitment to adopting effective carbon management procedures, which involves the implementation of actions that mitigate the impacts of its operation. This time, the project that stood out was the use, throughout 2021, of 100% electricity from renewable sources. The initiative guaranteed the Cemig REC (Renewable Energy Certificate) certification. The document proves that consumption was carried out through hydroelectric power, which contributed to clean and safe energy. “To give you an idea, this process resulted in an approximate reduction of 2,230 tons of carbon equivalent, which represented a total drop of 79% in direct emissions”, reveals Kleber Meira.

Belo Horizonte International Airport is among the 16 certified airports in 11 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, accredited with level 2 by Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA).
