Boston Logan International Airport Deploys AI Hologram to Assist Passenger Wayfinding

Boston Logan International Airport has introduced an AI-powered hologram concierge to help passengers navigate its terminals as part of a pilot service developed by the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport), Proto Hologram and Holomedia AI.

Named Amelia, the life-size AI avatar provides passengers with conversational assistance and real-time directions to gates, restaurants, shops, lounges and baggage claim. The system is designed to provide assistance around the clock and can offer step-by-step directions alongside live mapping and airport information.

The AI Concierge Wayfinder can communicate in up to 40 languages, with English, Spanish and French initially available. It also provides real-time TSA wait-time information, allowing passengers to factor current security queues into their journey through the airport.

Amelia can connect passengers directly with customer service staff when additional assistance is required. The system has also been designed with accessibility in mind, incorporating high-contrast displays, closed captioning, WCAG-compliant mapping and wheelchair-accessible positioning.

According to Proto, the deployment at Boston Logan represents the largest airport installation of its AI avatar technology to date. The hologram system is self-contained, incorporating a touchscreen and requiring no external hardware for passengers to interact with it.

The technology is also intended to support airport operations by providing additional assistance during peak periods and allowing customer service staff to focus on more complex passenger enquiries.

Boston Logan’s Amelia pilot is the result of a partnership between Massport, Proto Hologram and Holomedia AI, with Proto providing its hologram technology and Holomedia AI providing the AI Concierge Wayfinder platform.
