Construction begins on Auckland Airport duty free upgrade

Company Auckland Airport
Date 13.01.2026

Travellers passing through Auckland Airport’s international terminal will start to notice construction activity in the duty-free retail area, as staged works get underway to upgrade the airside retail space.

Completion is expected in late 2026 and will deliver an upgraded duty-free space with a more modern retail environment, with a broader range of brands and experiences introduced progressively, as part of Auckland Airport’s longer-term retail strategy.

Auckland Airport is focused on keeping travellers safe, as well as moving smoothly through the terminal and minimising disruption. Working closely with its duty-free partner Lagardère, travellers will continue to be able to explore the great range and variety of New Zealand’s most extensive duty free shopping during the construction.

The year-long programme is being delivered in phases, with wide walkways maintained and retail stores continuing to trade throughout the refurbishment.

Temporary hoardings (wall structures) and ceilings are being installed beyond security in the departures area, while staged work will progress in the arrivals duty free space in the coming months.

Stores will start to look different, as temporary shopping bays appear, and will be re-located during the construction.

Auckland Airport appreciates the understanding from travellers and their patience during these works.

Auckland Airport will share further detail on the duty-free transformation as well as updates on additional changes to the retail and food & beverage stores at AKL.
