Construction Works Have Begun on Riga Airport’s Apron 4 Reconstruction Project

Construction works have started within Riga Airport’s large‑scale Apron 4 reconstruction project, beginning with the dismantling of worn-out pavement slabs and equipment to launch the construction of new engineering network infrastructure.

To give passengers and Airport visitors an impression of the project and its outcome, a detailed model of Apron 4 is now on display in the passenger area of the Airport terminal. The model illustrates apron markings, taxiways and their lighting system, illumination solutions, and other design details. It also offers insight into the pavement structure layers and the materials used, allowing those interested to understand the specific technical and construction solutions applied in airfield pavement development.

The model can be viewed in the terminal’s connecting gallery, at the turn before Pier C.

The strategically important project for the development of airport infrastructure — “Reconstruction of Apron 4 at State Joint Stock Company “Riga International Airport” to ensure dual-use TEN-T infrastructure for civilian and military purposes,” supported by the EU’s European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) — foresees a complete reconstruction of the apron’s hard-surface area of more than 80,000 square metres. It will create aircraft stands for A–E class aircraft in ten different configurations, as well as new taxiing and service roads. This will provide Riga Airport with additional aircraft stands, including for wide‑body aircraft, enabling the accommodation of all types of cargo and military aircraft.

The reconstructed apron will also be an investment in military mobility, which is particularly important in the current geopolitical circumstances, and will allow the expansion of the cargo handling area. Reconstruction works must be completed by December 2027. The open tender for construction works was won by the road construction company SIA Binders.

Riga Airport’s development strategy foresees the creation of a cargo handling zone — a “cargo city” — in the vicinity of Aprons 4 and 5. Riga Airport currently handles 38% of all air cargo in the Baltic States.
