EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg has received approval from the governments of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft, along with the French civil aviation authority (DGAC), for a €157 million extension and modernisation of its landside terminal facilities.

The approval marks a significant milestone in the airport’s long-term modernisation programme, which will see more than €600 million invested in infrastructure over seven years. Around half of the investment is intended to improve service quality and enhance the experience for passengers and visitors.

Terminal Extension to Improve Passenger Experience

The project includes the construction of a new building covering approximately 14,000 m² on the eastern side of the terminal, alongside the renovation of around 15,000 m² of existing terminal space.

A key element will be the consolidation of security screening facilities within a new central building, creating simpler, more intuitive passenger routes through the terminal. The plans also include improvements to the catering and duty-free areas, as well as a reorganisation of terminal access.

The project is focused on modernising existing facilities and improving operational processes rather than increasing capacity for aircraft handling.

Construction Scheduled for 2027

The approvals represent an important stage in the authorisation process required under the 1949 Franco-Swiss Treaty governing EuroAirport. The airport’s investment decisions require approval from the relevant authorities in both countries, with the Swiss federal government consulting the two cantons and the French side represented by the DGAC.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2027, with completion expected towards the end of 2031. The project will be fully funded by EuroAirport.

Sustainability is a key consideration throughout the planning and construction phases. The airport aims to achieve high energy efficiency, secure a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certification and minimise the building’s carbon footprint.

The landside terminal extension represents a major investment in EuroAirport’s existing infrastructure, with the aim of improving service quality and delivering a more efficient and comfortable experience for passengers and visitors.
