Innovation connects Belo Horizonte International Airport to the future

Airport, security, logistics and mobility technologies gain unprecedented performance with optimized operations integrated with 5G and sustainability, generating lower costs and greater operational efficiency

A green airport, strategically located in the heart of the country, an hour’s flight away for 70% of the national GDP and a true hub of connections to 50 Brazilian destinations, based on two intrinsic pillars: innovation and sustainability. This is the profile of the terminal that is consolidating the smart airport concept in Brazil with the pioneering spirit of 5G technology, in addition to cellular bandwidth. The focus of the transformation into an intelligent airport is connectivity with fluidity in the passenger experience, high operational performance, security, guarantee of efficiency and reliability.

The unprecedented initiative in Brazil, made possible by the synergy with companies and anchor entities of national relevance, in search of collaborative innovation, directs the creation of the project of the first Innovation Center in the country, which should start operating at the airport in 2023. “We have a mini city installed in our terminal, with a range of services such as parking, stores, cargo logistics, security and a sewage treatment station, where around 40 thousand people pass through each day”, reveals the CEO of BH Airport, Kleber Meira. “To get an idea of the importance of this indicator, of the 853 municipalities in Minas Gerais, 89% of them have less than 40 thousand inhabitants”, he explains.

“Our objective is to consolidate the concept of a smart airport connected to the smart city environment, developing the airport of the future, with mobility and safety”, reinforces Kleber Meira. In this scenario, the Minas Gerais terminal plays the role of test pilot, opening space to configure itself as a great proving ground, in an ecosystem conducive to innovation, connecting companies, startups and universities to the airport, which configures as a backdrop for this environment by presenting itself as a mini city”, he adds.

The Innovation Center will be housed on the second floor of the airport. In this potential technological laboratory, innovation ceases to be a differential and becomes a strategic tool, focused on improving the performance of the airport and the passenger journey, with consequent cost reduction.
