Level 2 recognises airports that have established a carbon management approach, calculated emissions under their direct control and demonstrated actions to reduce them. The achievement marks an important step in Mactan Cebu International Airport’s work to manage its operational carbon footprint.

Under its updated Carbon Management Plan, the airport has set a target to reduce emissions intensity by more than 90% by 2029, compared with its baseline. This supports its longer term commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The airport’s reduction measures include identifying energy efficiency opportunities through its building management system, generating renewable electricity through a 1.64 MWp rooftop solar installation and using smart sensors. It is also strengthening monitoring and maintenance protocols for heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, monitoring fuel consumption across vehicles and equipment to improve efficiency, and converting lighting to LED.

This achievement is a clear testament to what strong public-private synergy can deliver for sustainable infrastructure in the Philippines,” said MCIAA General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Julius G. Neri, Jr.
