Enhanced screening equipment to be deployed at KLIA and regional airports alongside targeted physical screening and K9 security measures

Malaysia Airports is strengthening security measures across its airport network through the deployment of enhanced screening equipment at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and other regional airports.

The measures form part of a coordinated approach to airport and border security involving Malaysia Airports and national enforcement agencies.

Malaysia Airports said the enhanced screening equipment will augment its existing security measures, while targeted physical pat-down screening will also resume where warranted by risk assessment. Handheld metal detectors will continue to be used as part of the screening process.

K9 units deployed by the Royal Malaysia Police and Royal Malaysian Customs Department will provide an additional layer of security alongside the airport operator’s existing Aviation Security (AVSEC) functions.

Malaysia Airports’ AVSEC teams remain responsible for safeguarding civil aviation operations against acts of unlawful interference and potential threats to aviation and air transport security.

Dato’ Mohd Izani Ghani, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports, said the coordinated approach would provide greater clarity over the responsibilities of the different agencies involved in airport security.

This coordinated approach provides much-needed clarity on roles and responsibilities, ensuring that each agency can bring its respective authority and expertise to bear. We remain fully committed to playing our part and working alongside the Government and enforcement agencies to safeguard the country’s gateways.

Malaysia Airports said engagement with the relevant authorities and agencies remains ongoing to ensure the security enhancements can be implemented effectively while maintaining safe, secure and efficient airport operations.
