Nantes Atlantique airport achieves level 4 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme

Company Nantes Atlantique Airport
Date 23.01.2025

Nantes Atlantique Airport has achieved Level 4 “Transformation” of the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA), a key program managed by the Airport Council International (ACI). This Level 4 certification aligns with VINCI Airports’ global strategy, the world’s first private airport operator to have committed to achieving Net Zero Emissions across all its European airports by 2030. To obtain this, Nantes Atlantique Airport developed its own decarbonization strategy, aiming to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) by at least 90% by 2030, compared to 2019 levels.

Nantes Atlantique Airport has reduced CO2 emissions from its activities (Scopes 1 and 2) by nearly 50% since 2019 through the following actions:

  • Implementation of energy-saving measures by optimizing temperature settings for heating and air conditioning ;
  • Large-scale replacement of lighting with LED: 90% already replaced on the runway and in the terminal, with 100% to be replaced in parking areas by summer 2025 ;
  • Gradual transition of the service and operational vehicle fleet to low-emission models (electric and hybrid): over 1 in 3 vehicles have already been replaced ;
  • Limiting the use of generators to mandatory regulatory tests and in case of power outages ;
  • Introduction of green electricity contracts: 100% of the electricity consumed at the airport is generated from renewable energy sources.

Nantes Atlantique Airport has also implemented a partnership plan to encourage third parties, including airlines, ground handlers, retailers, and others whose emissions are included in Scope 3, to reduce their own emissions as part of a comprehensive decarbonization approach. The airport is also rolling out a project to electrify 12 aircraft stands, eliminating the need for auxiliary engines and fossil fuels. Additionally, 100 electric charging stations for vehicles and ground handling equipment are currently being installed.

Only 13 of the 78 French airports involved in the ACA process have achieved this level of accreditation, which testifies to the effectiveness of the actions undertaken by Nantes Atlantique airport.

This certification rewards the constant efforts of our teams and partners to make Nantes Atlantique an exemplary airport in terms of sustainable development,said Xavier Lortat-Jacob, Airport Director. “We are determined to continue on this path and achieve our ambitious CO2 emission reduction targets.
