New Boarding Area 'A' inaugurated Today at Leonardo da Vinci Airport with Completely 'Green' Infrastructure

- The new 37,000 square metre area for Schengen and domestic flights is an important step in the expansion project of the eastern area of Leonardo da Vinci airport, with a total value of EUR 400 million.
- It is among the first airport infrastructures of this size with Leed Gold certification: powered by photovoltaic panels, it has 23 new gates and 11,000 square metres of glazed surfaces.
- A new 6,000 square metre shopping mall with 21 shops, representing Italian shopping and food excellence.
- An integral part of the project is culture, through the Ostia Antica Archaeological Park, to promote the historical and artistic value of an area that has been the gateway to Rome for two thousand years. Marco Lodola’s work ‘DETI’ is also exhibited as a symbol of universal peace.
The new boarding area A for Schengen and domestic flights was inaugurated today at Leonardo da Vinci Airport. The event, attended by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, was also attended by the President of ENAC, Pierluigi Di Palma, the Mayor of Fiumicino, Esterino Montino, the Mayor of the Metropolitan City of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, the President of the Lazio Region, Nicola Zingaretti, and the Minister of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility, Enrico Giovannini. Also present were Atlantia Chairman Giampiero Massolo together with Atlantia CEO Carlo Bertazzo as well as ADR Chairman Claudio De Vincenti and CEO Marco Troncone.
The new 37,000 m2 Boarding Area A, a testimonial to Italian excellence from an engineering and architectural point of view, was completed using the airport site as efficiently as possible (without consuming additional land) and built using the country’s best expertise. It is a state-of-the-art infrastructure for innovative and environmentally friendly solutions that will accommodate an additional 6 million departing passengers yearly at Fiumicino airport, thanks to 23 new gates, 13 of which are equipped with boarding bridges. The infrastructure, an important step in the project to upgrade the eastern area of the airport with a total investment of EUR 400 million, was completed despite the difficult years of the pandemic, which hit the air transport sector particularly hard. It is, therefore, part of Aeroporti di Roma’s airport development project and of the Atlantia Group’s sustainability and innovation-oriented path, whose focus is to make investments that enable the energy transition of its assets while at the same time activating its strong technological upgrade.
The work consists of two large structures connected by a linking body along which 7 masterpieces from the Ostia antica Archaeological Park are exhibited to promote Roman classicism and the historical and artistic value of the area where Fiumicino airport operates an innovative pier dedicated to flights to Schengen and domestic destinations, which allows the docking of the most modern aircraft available and an exclusive shopping gallery with over 6,000 square metres of space dedicated to retail and excellent food & beverage. Outstanding services, in line with the record achieved by ADR in passenger appreciation, certified by Airport Council International and obtained by the Roman airport for five years in a row.

In this context, we want Fiumicino to continue to be an excellent visiting card: Italy’s future-proof gateway.
The new boarding area A is part of a broader programme that envisages investments of EUR 10 billion – 2 of which have already been spent – up to the end of the concession, to support the country’s international connectivity and to continue to feed, to an ever-increasing extent, the socio-economic sector, while anticipating the necessary ecological and digital transition together with the best Italian and international excellences.”

The pier for embarking and disembarking
More than 100 Schengen and domestic destinations can be reached from the new infrastructure equipped with 23 gates and 13 boarding bridges. The significant number of fingers will immediately lead to a significant reduction in the use of buses on the track, with benefits on both service quality and emission reduction. All gates are equipped with new ‘touchless’ technology, allowing passengers to perform independently and at speed boarding procedures. Pier A has dimensions of approximately 38 x 254 m and consists of three levels, one of which is underground, with an overall height of approximately 20 m. The interventions were designed favouring the contribution of natural lighting, with large skylight windows inserted in the roof, similar to real portholes. To give an idea of the size of Boarding Area A, one only has to think that the total glazed area is over 11,000 square metres, a space equivalent to 15 Olympic swimming pools. In addition, the project defined layouts and fittings of the internal circulation and parking areas, such as to favour the most comfortable relations between the passenger and the environment. A photovoltaic system with monocrystalline silicon panels was also built on the roof, powering the infrastructure.
Operations at the pier will start tomorrow: the first Ita Airways flight will leave at 07.00, bound for Milan Linate.
The Commercial Gallery
The commercial space has a maximum length of about 166m and a width of about 30m to 45m with a surface area, including the upper floor, of more than 6,000 square metres, the equivalent of courts. At departure level, the passenger offer is varied and consists of shopping, retail and food & beverage outlets; services available to passengers such as nursery, playground, smoking booths, etc. There are 21 shops with the best available on the market for shopping and food. On the upper level, on the mezzanine level of Terminal 1, there is a food area with a ‘market’ format, i.e. where one chooses dishes that are cooked on the spot, and VIP lounges and work areas will also be available soon. A photovoltaic system was also installed on the roof of the shopping gallery.
The ‘green’ footprint of the boarding area A
The architectural concept of the area was realised by using the most advanced building technologies and the highest environmental protection standards. The entire project, of considerable architectural merit, is ‘made in Italy’, as it was developed by ADR Ingegneria’s staff of architects and engineers. The classic shapes, combined with transparency and maximum use of natural light, give the passenger the impression of being in the middle of the slopes. In addition, Pier A is currently being certified according to the international ‘Leed’ protocol – (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) level Gold for the design, construction and operation of sustainable buildings. This level of certification denotes how the infrastructure has been designed and built to have a reduced environmental impact. Particular attention has been paid to installations and raw materials, with a green perspective, with systems for climatic treatment through radiant floor panels, control of temperature and humidity parameters in the environment, also through integrated detection of crowding in the areas, which will allow a significant containment of energy consumption. The ‘green’ design demands were also applied in materials and furnishing components; the artificial lighting was created with innovative LED technologies to recreate a true ‘starry sky’ effect on the ceiling vaults.
Art and culture on display at Pier A
Along the connecting body to Pier A, passengers can admire sculptures and paintings from Ancient Rome, admiring the” Humans and Gods in Ostia antica” exhibition, scientific project care of the Ostia Antica Archaeological Park with the logistic assistance of ADR. This project unifies the imperial Ostia-Portus, a port system for people and goods capable of connecting the entire world, ideally with today’s Aereoporti di Roma mission. The seven works on display (statue of Apollo citaredo, statue of Sabina as Ceres, two statues of Nymphs, frescoes with a knight and a married couple, and a sculptural group of wrestlers) represent the artistic landscape and art of the ancient Roman colony, originating from urban monuments and the city territory (Terme di Nettuno, Theatre, Necropolis of the Porto all’Isola Sacra). It is the same area where, today, Leonardo Da Vinci airport – the main hub for passengers traffic in Italy and one of the major European hubs – rises.
This new artistic installation adds to the one already placed in boarding area E, “The images of time”, which displays six works from Ancient Roman (five sculptures and a splendid mosaic), all coming from the excavations of Ostia Antica and from the Necropolis of Isola Sacra.
Also on display at Pier A is a work by artist Marco Lodola entitled ‘Deti’, which is inspired by the Cyrillic word for ‘children’ and is intended as a call for peace. The work, donated by the author to Aeroporti di Roma, is a homage to Picasso’s famous dove and the colours recall those of the flag of peace.
