Date 29.05.2025

SACBO, the management company of Milan Bergamo Airport, inaugurated the new check-in area on Wednesday, May 28, which adds to the existing spaces dedicated to passenger and baggage acceptance operations. The new volume is part of the expansion works program for the passenger terminal, which affects the departures area and will allow the availability, starting from early December 2025, of the new area dedicated to security checks equipped with state-of-the-art X-ray machines, currently under construction on the upper floor above the check-in area.

In the new check-in area, 30 new acceptance counters have been installed, of which 22 in “self drop bag” mode allowing for the independent registration of checked baggage and 8 traditional ones, in addition to the 34 pre-existing counters (28 traditional + 6 self drop bag), for a total of 64 stations. The two lines of check-in counters are topped by two high-resolution LED monitors that allow for better visibility of the flight schedule in real-time, with indications of the departure time and gate, and a 30% energy saving compared to the consumption of backlit LCD monitors. The entire check-in area is equipped with stereoscopic sensors to monitor waiting times for check-in operations.

For the expansion works of the east section of the passenger terminal, which will be completed by December 2025, SACBO has invested 41 million euros from its own financial resources. With the opening of the new check-in area, the expansion of the X-ray baggage handling system (BHS) was carried out, adding a total of 3,720 square meters to the ground floor. At the same time, the access roads to the terminal were upgraded, both vehicular and pedestrian, with the extension and widening of the sidewalk in front of the departures area.

“The expansion of the check-in area marks a fundamental milestone in the program to upgrade airport infrastructure, allowing us to respond more effectively to operational needs, making the reception and accessibility comfortable for passengers while simultaneously facilitating the tasks of the staff,” emphasises Giovanni Sanga, president of SACBO. The new spaces have been designed to accommodate technological evolution and the digital transformation of check-in procedures. This allows for faster operations, ensuring safety and precision, while the new security checks are being set up on the upper floor, which, within six months, will mark the next leap in quality for our airport, consolidating its level of passenger appreciation and its role in the international air transport landscape.
