Osaka and Kansai Airports sign agreement on the use of airport facilities for aeromedical transport during disasters to enhance community disaster response

Company Kansai International Airport
Date 10.03.2025

Kansai Airports is pleased to announce that it has signed an agreement with Osaka Prefecture regarding the use of airport facilities for aeromedical transport during disasters on Monday, March 10, 2025.

This agreement aims to enhance disaster response capabilities by providing the necessary space at Kansai International Airport and Osaka Itami Airport to deploy temporary medical facilities for aeromedical transport (Staging Care Unit or SCU*) in the event of major disasters in Japan.

By setting up SCUs at the airports, it will be possible to conduct triage and treatment of patients near the aircraft and transport them to medical institutions outside the disaster area. This will enhance the medical relief system during disasters, especially for patients who cannot be easily transported to nearby medical facilities during large-scale disasters.

Kansai Airports Group will continue to prioritize safety and security in airport operations and work with related businesses to create a better environment.

*Staging Care Unit (SCU): An abbreviation derived from the initials of Staging Care Unit. It refers to a temporary medical facility established during major disasters to enable the wide transport of patients to disaster base hospitals outside the affected area for definitive treatment.
