Public Tender Launched for the Modernisation of Runway 1 at “Henri Coandă”Airport

The largest Investment project in the history of “Henri Coandă”Airport 

The National Company Bucharest Airports (CNAB) has launched a public tender for the modernization of Runway 1 at “Henri Coandă” Airport.

This major project represents a decisive step in modernizing Romania’s aviation infrastructure, being the most significant investment project in the history of the airport.

Through this project, CNAB continues to modernize and expand the operational capacity of “Henri Coandă” Airport, bringing the airport infrastructure in line with the strictest international aviation standards.

The project includes: the complete renovation and modernization of Runway 08R-26L at Bucharest International Airport “Henri Coandă”; construction of 5 new taxiways; modernization of 2 existing taxiways; full replacement of runway and taxiway lighting systems; modernization of the underground cable networks that power the lighting systems; reconfiguration of the runway safety area; relocation of the perimeter road; construction of blast pads at the runway ends to protect embankments from aircraft engine blasts during takeoff.

For operational and technical reasons, the works will be carried out in stages to ensure the continuity of airport operations and to allow military aircraft access to the runway from the 90th Air Transport Base.

The contract is estimated at approximately €106 million, with a maximum execution period of 16 months, 9 months for design, and a minimum warranty of 5 years from the date of project completion. The deadline for submitting bids is December 18, 2025.

The last major modernization of Runway 1 took place 31 years ago, in 1994. Since then, to ensure the safe operation of air traffic at “Henri Coandă” Airport, the runway underwent repairs in 2017, during the previous mandate of the current CNAB General Director, Bogdan Mîndrescu.
