Work crews will be replacing pavement on Tampa International Airport’s runways and taxiways this summer, but travelers won’t feel many impacts.
TPA’s guests may see extra work being done on the Airport’s runways this summer, but the scheduled maintenance shouldn’t cause any major travel issues.
Two of three of Tampa International Airport’s runways – the 1R-19L runway east of the Main Terminal and the east-west 10-28 runway – and several of its taxiways will be undergoing pavement work for several months. This work is necessary to keep pavement in a state of good repair and ensure compliance with FAA standards.
Crews are removing old sections of concrete to be hauled away, inspecting underneath the slabs and then preparing the site and pouring new concrete in its place.
This work requires some temporary closures as construction crews repair and replace the concrete and asphalt. That may extend taxi times for aircraft on the ground at times as they navigate around construction, but the Airport will continue to operate all flights.
Concrete slab replacement started earlier this month and will last into late Fall.
The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority Board of Directors approved a contract for $13.2 million at its March 2025 meeting. Ajax Paving Industries of Florida LLC is performing the work on the airfield.
