As part of the project for further multi-level upgrading of the regional airports and having already completed the first phase of restructuring and reconstruction of the runway at Corfu Airport “Ioannis Kapodistrias,” Fraport Greece, the operator of the 14 regional airports in Greece, will proceed to the second phase of the construction works, in this regard.
Specifically, during the period from November 21, 2023 to December 4, 2023 & January 16, 2024, to January 29, 2024, the runway’s operation will be suspended. During these aforementioned periods, only ambulance helicopters will operate, if necessary, while all other airport services within the terminal, will be available to the interested public.
The above works concern the complete reconstruction of the runway at Corfu Airport “Ioannis Kapodistrias”, aiming to further enhance the level of safety at the airport. This project will result in the ability to handle not only larger aircraft types, but also an increased number of flights.
These works form part of the Concession Agreement. They also are carried out in terms of sustainability and respect for the land, since supporting sustainable development and social responsibility are Fraport Greece’s key principles.
The runway’s suspension of operation is absolutely necessary due to the size and complexity of the project, the soil morphology and the surrounding area. Nevertheless, and according to the design, the specified intervals are the shortest possible period during which the runway can be suspended.
Regulatory compliance and safety, at all levels, are key priorities for the company. It is worth noting that these works are part of a broader plan to further upgrade the already high level of safety and operation of the 14 regional airports managed by Fraport Greece. As mentioned above, they are related to large-scale projects to be executed by the company, as part of the Recovery and Resilience Fund financing.
