Southwest Airlines Unveils Hawaii-Themed Aircraft at Long Beach Airport

Southwest Airlines unveiled a new Hawaii-themed aircraft livery at Long Beach Airport (LGB), timed to coincide with Southwest’s fifth year of service to the Aloha State. LGB is one of eight mainland gateways for nonstop flights to the Hawaiian Islands on Southwest Airlines.

“Long Beach Airport is the ultimate launchpad for Hawaiian getaways, and with Southwest Airlines’ remarkable new aircraft, there’s no better way to kick off your vacation,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “Many thanks to Southwest for recognizing our exceptional service with this special ceremony for this beautiful aircraft.”

The specialty aircraft is named Imua One™, which is a rallying cry in the Hawaiian language that translates to an urging forward. Imua One™ traveled from a painting facility in Spokane, Washington and then conducted a fly-by and its first touchdown at Long Beach Airport. Kahu Kordell C. L. Kekoa, a Hawaiian church Minister, led a blessing and dedication of the specialty aircraft during the unveiling ceremony, which was also included remarks by Mayor Rex Richardson and attendance by other City leaders.

“When we dedicate an airplane to a place, it’s not only a symbol of gratitude, but also a promise we’ve made to each other,” said Bob Jordan, President and Chief Executive Officer at Southwest Airlines, who was on hand for the special event. “Hawaii welcomed Southwest with warm aloha, and we approached serving the people of Hawaii with an earnest desire to connect them with important moments, places, and the people who matter most in their lives.”

Oahu-based Osaki Creative Group designed Imua One™ with the guidance of Herman Piikea Clark, Kanaka Maoli/indigenous Hawaiian artist, designer and researcher. Imua One™ is the first Southwest Airlines aircraft with in-seat power available at every seat and the third Boeing 737 MAX 8 in the Southwest fleet of specialty liveries, which is an airline term for an aircraft’s paint scheme. Fans are invited to follow the aircraft (tail number N8710M) and share photos of Imua One™ on social media using #ImuaOne.<

Southwest Airlines first launched Hawaii service from LGB in 2021 and currently provides daily nonstop flights to Honolulu year-round and seasonal daily nonstop flights to Maui.<
