Lithuanian Airports (LTOU) has signed a construction contract with the engineering and construction company “KRS,” which will carry out a comprehensive modernization of the interior spaces of Vilnius Airport’s old terminals.
LTOU announced the public procurement for this project at the end of 2024. After completing all required procurement procedures, a contract worth €15 million (excluding VAT) was signed.
In total, the reconstruction will cover around 10,000 square meters of space — from the floors to the roof, which will also be renovated.
It is stated that the layout and technological solutions of the old terminals can no longer support the planned expansion of the airport or meet the growing number and expectations of passengers.
A continued transformation of the airport
The project includes the renovation of two terminals (T2 and T3), built in 1993 and 2007 respectively. The work is scheduled to take a year and a half — from the summer of 2025 to the end of 2026.
During the reconstruction, Vilnius Airport will operate as usual. The work will be carried out in phases, with all efforts made to minimize the impact on passengers.
“Our primary goals are to significantly improve the energy efficiency of the existing buildings and to create a modern space for additional commercial services, which are expected to welcome passengers by the end of 2026. I’m convinced that the former departure hall — familiar to many over the past decades — will be completely transformed and unrecognizable once the project is complete,” says Arnas Dūmanas, Head of the Infrastructure Department at LTOU.
This modernization of the older spaces is part of Vilnius Airport’s ongoing development. It is worth noting that the new departures terminal at Vilnius Airport began operating in February 2025, and preparations for the construction of a new arrivals terminal are already underway, with an architectural competition currently being held.
Work Begins This Summer
The first phase of the conversion project is planned to begin in the summer of 2025 in the former departures hall, which will become the new Schengen departure area with integrated commercial services.
The conversion will introduce significantly more advanced modern engineering solutions in all respects. As a result, the renovated building is expected to have lower operational costs and energy consumption.
