London City Airport marked AirportsUK National Health and Safety Week (Monday 11 – Friday 15 May) with a programme of events focused on wellbeing, safety and teamwork.

Our airport’s Health and Safety team worked with partners to deliver a fantastic week showcasing everything LCY does to prioritise the safety of those who work at and use our airport.

All staff members were asked to make a personal health and safety pledge for the year ahead and were encouraged to take time out of the day to join the various events.

Opportunities for staff were designed around three themes of occupational health, mental health and wellbeing and climate change and safety.

There were live demonstrations from the emergency services, including First Aid training from London’s Air Ambulance charity and an impressive display of skill by Police Dog Cerberus and his handler from the Metropolitan Police Service. Colleagues could also access mental health information and guidance, and sign up for physical health checks and wellbeing sessions. These were open to airside and landside staff, as well as colleagues from our supply partners.

Last year, 3.7 million passengers travelled through London City Airport, and as in all safety-critical environments, our responsibility to colleagues and customers remains central to everything we do.

Anthony Daly, Head of Health and Safety at London City Airport, said:

“The importance of this annual campaign and the opportunity it presents to remind people about looking after themselves, each other and our customers, cannot be overstated.

“It brought the whole LCY family together, including partners and stakeholders, and the week was full of practical workshops and experiences which brought a real buzz to the airport.”

Key to delivering the activity last week were our local partners, including the ‘Move and Thrive’ project from the University of East London.

David Cowell, Associate Director of Sport: Wellbeing and Impact, East London Sport, SportsDock, University of East London, said:

“The Move and Thrive project team members were delighted to support LCY’s Safety Week.

“Over two days, students from UEL delivered more than 50 individual health checks in addition to 17 massages.

“This represents a significant first step for our Move & Thrive project, which is growing from strength to strength in supporting the wellbeing of workers across East London. A healthy workforce means a more productive workforce, and we see this new service as integral to supporting local business growth.”

Commenting on the week, Victoria MacRae, AirportsUK’s Head of Regulations, Operations and Compliance, said:

“AirportsUK’s Health and Safety Week is a brilliant opportunity for members and all those involved in airport operations to showcase the amazing work they do, day-in, day-out, to provide the safest possible environment.

“Our members are often at the cutting edge of measures to keep passengers, staff and local communities safe, and which then are adopted by other sectors, so it is great to celebrate all they do.”

Following Health and Safety Week, AirportsUK will also be welcoming entries to its Health and Safety Awards, due to be presented later in 2026.

Partners involved in the LCY Health and Safety Week included: The Metropolitan Police Service’s Aviation Policing team and Dog Unit, London Ambulance Service’s HART (Hazardous Area Response Team), Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS ), Royal Airforce Drone Unit, University of East London, Back In Action Physiotherapy, COPE Occupational Health Services, NATS Air Traffic Control, British Airways City Flyer, Menzies Fuel, Swissport and Gatwick Ground Handling Services (GGS).
