The development history of the aviation industry is closely related to the progress of materials science. In recent years, with the continuous improvement of aircraft and engine performance and structural efficiency, advanced aeronautical materials technology has become, second only to the aeronautical power system, a key technology to ensure the development of aeronautical equipment, as well as a basic and pioneering technology to achieve weight reduction, long service life of the aircraft structure and a high thrust-to-weight ratio of the engine.

Materials and aircrafts have been constantly evolving under the mutual impetus of each other. The application of advanced materials is one of the most important driving forces in the development and advancement of aviation technology. Aerospace materials are the basis for the technical performance, survivability, life extension and affordability of aviation products, and to a certain extent determine the manufacturing cost of aircraft airframe structures.

Materials are also an important link in the “supply chain security” of commercial aircraft.

The development of aviation equipment industry cannot be separated from the strong support of aviation materials, the key raw materials for aviation equipment are metal materials and composite materials of two categories, including titanium alloy, aviation steel, ceramic-based and other special materials. In recent years, China’s aviation materials enterprises have increased investment in research and development, technology innovation capacity has been enhanced, and the technical level of products has been improved.
