The Danish company has delivered the core systems for Naviair’s new air traffic control solution in Nuuk, which became operational on 14 May 2026 following final approval from the Danish Transport Authority.
The systems support Naviair’s establishment of a new Terminal Maneuvering Area (TMA) around Nuuk and will contribute to more efficient and safer handling of the increasing air traffic in the area.
Establishment of the new TMA comes, among other factors, in response to restrictions introduced by the Danish Transport Authority in September 2025, which limited the number of landings and take-offs at Nuuk Airport; limitations, which have impacted both passenger traffic and business activity and thus required rapid action.
Insero Air Traffic Solutions has previously delivered similar systems to Naviair’s Flight Information Center (FIC) in Greenland and was awarded the project in January 2026. In close collaboration with Naviair, which now also delivers air traffic control services in Greenland, the project has been completed within a short timeframe, and the new and now operational TMA solution enables a lifting of capacity restrictions at Nuuk Airport, allowing for increased traffic and more passengers.
“The new air traffic control solution in Nuuk is an important step in the development of air traffic in Greenland. With the new systems, we are better equipped to manage traffic efficiently and safely while supporting the expected growth in Nuuk Airport – also thanks to Insero Air Traffic Solutions’ rapid adaptation and deployment of the systems,” says Bjarne Kent Nielsen, Senior Product Owner – Navigation and Meteorology at Naviair.
Strengthening capacity for continued passenger growth in Nuuk
Implementation of the new systems means that air traffic around Nuuk Airport will increasingly be managed by air traffic controllers within a defined area before being handed over to the airport’s AFIS service. This provides a more coherent and efficient traffic flow, benefiting both passengers and the continued development of Greenland’s primary airport.
According to data from Statistics Greenland, passenger numbers on international scheduled flights from Nuuk continue to grow significantly. From January to March 2026, a total of 19,003 international passengers travelled through Greenlandic airports; an increase of nearly 24 percent compared to the same period in 2025. The vast majority hereof (18,008) travelled from Nuuk.
“Our systems provide air traffic controllers with the information and tools needed to ensure safe and optimal traffic handling, while also making it possible to manage more landings and take-offs. This helps to ensure that Nuuk Airport is well prepared to handle the increasing passenger numbers,” says Michael Tandrup, CEO of Insero Air Traffic Solutions.
Insero Air Traffic Solutions handled establishment and configuration of a Flight Data Processing System (Insero AIMS) as well as an advanced radar and situational display system (Insero RADIS). The company also handled installation, testing, and training of air traffic controllers in Nuuk.
“We are pleased to support both Naviair and Greenland Airports with an exceptionally fast implementation of an efficient solution that makes a real difference for operations and the increasing air traffic in Greenland,” says Michael Tandrup.
