Press Release Date 30.09.2016

The European Union has launched a programme to support border security in North Africa and the Sahel region.

This is an important recognition of the fact that despite being the other side of the Mediterranean, North African nations are the EU’s immediate neighbours and therefore vital partners in securing EU’s borders and security.

Instability in Middle Eastern, sub-Saharan and North African nations such as Mali, Libya and Syria pose a major threat to their North African neighbours and by implication, to the rest of the world.

Shifts of population in North America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia as well as the increasing threat from international terrorism pose an ongoing challenge to the global border management community.

Experts, policy makers and practitioners from around the world will gather in Morocco to discuss the issues at the 2017 World Border Security Congress, the first to be held in North Africa.

Current speaker announcements include:

  • Rear Admiral Enrico Credendino, Commander, EU Naval Force Mediterranean
  • Peter Nilsson, Project Manager, Border Police Division, AIRPOL
  • Michael Gaul, Senior Advisor in NATO’s Emerging Security Challenges Division
  • Teresa Hardy, Head of Carrier Delivery, Border Force, UK
  • Lieutenant-General Vasyl Servatiuk, The First Deputy Head, State Border Guard Service of Ukraine

World Border Security Congress will be held in Casablanca, Morocco 21-23 March 2017.
