Istanbul’s two airports have set a new record for the number of flights handled in one on Sunday as millions of people returned to Istanbul during the last 24 hours of the nine-day long official holiday during the Eid al-Fitr

A total of 2,228 flights have taken off and landed with 233,542 passengers passing through the terminals in Istanbul’s Atatürk and Sabiha Gökçen airports, with 142,000 of them using Atatürk, breaking another all-time record.

The record came only weeks after the Daesh-related terror attack killed 45 people and injured dozens in a triple suicide bombing and gun attack at Istanbul’s main Atatürk Airport, in the latest deadly strike to rock Turkey’s most-populated city, which had many similarities with the terror attacks carried out in Brussels in March.

Located just outside Turkey’s biggest city, Atatürk Airport served more than 60 million passengers in 2015, making it one of the busiest in the world.
