Singapore Changi Airport has picked up the coveted Airport of the Year Award at the 2016 Skytrax World Airport Awards, which were announced on March 16 at Passenger Terminal Expo in Cologne, Germany. This is the sixth time Changi has triumphed in this award. The awards ceremony, which attracted CEOs and directors from airports around the world, also saw Incheon International Airport renew its five-star airport rating – this rating is awarded to airports achieving the highest, overall quality performance in areas such as customer service, security, immigration, retail and F&B. According to CEO of the Skytrax awards, Edward Plaisted, 2016 represents a significant year for the awards: “These have been our biggest awards yet. We have received more than 13.2 million completed passenger surveys and over 550 airports are covered in the survey – these figures beat all figures from previous years,” he said.

SITA launches Smart Path biometric technology
Air transport IT provider SITA has unveiled its new Smart Path biometric solution today at Passenger Terminal Expo 2016, which is taking place in Cologne, Germany.
The new technology allows passengers to move through the airport and board the aircraft simply by presenting themselves for a biometric check at the beginning of their journey. Once verified there is no further need to present a boarding pass, passport or travel documents.
With SITA Smart Path, the passenger’s biometric details are captured through a facial scan at the first touch point in the journey. The record is checked against the passenger’s travel documents, typically the passport, and a secure single token is created. Then, at each step of the journey – from check-in to aircraft boarding or border control – passengers gain access simply with a facial scan and without having to show any further documentation.

NEC Display Solutions unveils a new approach to displays
NEC Display Solutions, a provider of airport display technology solutions, has unveiled a new approach to displaying information at the airport through the use of LED display surfaces.
According to the company, LED technology is set to transform how architects design and build airports, as it offers building blocks of a digital surface, allowing greater opportunity for creativity and better addressing the particular needs of each stakeholder at the airport.
New shapes and new surfaces can be explored and turned into digital surfaces.
