Track and trace luggage tag readers at PTE2016

Press Release Date 05.02.2016

SICK will exhibit its latest track and trace system for automatic IATA luggage tag reading, in baggage handling systems.

Designed as a hybrid solution, the system features both laser scanners and cameras, with two SICK CLV laser scanners and a Lector®654 Flex camera, which identify and decode IATA bar code used in baggage transportation systems.

Along with the lasers, used historically in IATA tag scanning, the system also incorporates matrix cameras, whose high resolution and extensive depth of field are standout features, with SICK says improves the system’s overall reading performance.

Images captured by the cameras can also be used for downstream processes, including optical character recognition and video coding, making it possible to process the plain text printed on the luggage tag.

The company say using flight number and airport code, mean the images can significant improve baggage transportation processes – particularly in cases where the baggage source message (BSM) is missing. This reduces the need for manual baggage post-processing and allows baggage to be transferred more quickly.
