Heavy Weight Deflectometer (HWD)

Description
Specifications

The Heavy Weight Deflectometer (HWD) is trusted worldwide – from scorching deserts to humid tropics, or even the icy extremes of polar regions.

Dynatest developed the first commercially available Heavy Weight Deflectometer (HWD) and can be used to test on both rigid, paver block and flexible pavements on roads and airports.

The HWD can apply a loading in the range of 30-320kN, enabling it to simulate vehicle loading from to the most extreme aircraft wheel load such as the Boeing 777, the Airbus 340, or 380.

The output from the deflectometer can be used:

  • For measurement of layer moduli, stresses and Strain, mode of failure, rehabilitation options, and PCN value
  • For quality control or existing and new pavement construction
  • Improve and understand pavement modeling
  • In pavement management
  • In pavement research

  • Dynamic loading enables detailed structural evaluation of pavement layers and supports the development of optimized rehabilitation strategies.
  • Identifies the specific layer of failure—not just overall bearing capacity—providing deeper insight for maintenance planning.
  • Performs rapid structural pavement assessments with minimal disruption to traffic operations.
  • Compares a wide range of rehabilitation options, including milling, recycling, and overlays, to determine the most effective approach.
  • Ideal for QA/QC testing of newly constructed pavements, verifying structural integrity before opening to traffic.
  • Capable of testing a wide range of pavement types using mechanistic principles for comprehensive pavement evaluation.
